Alice Paul was born on January 11, 1885 at Paulsdale in Mount Laurel Township, New Jersey. She was the eldest of four children of William Mickle Paul and Tacie Paul (née Parry), and a descendant of William Penn, the Quaker founder of Pennsylvania. She grew up in the Quaker tradition of public service; her ancestors included participants in the New Jersey Committee of Correspondence in the Revolutionary era and a state legislative leader in the 19th century. The Quakers believed that all people, including women, were equal in the sight of God. Paul first learned about woman suffrage from her mother, a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association; Paul would sometimes join her mother Tacie ~Parry in attending suffragist meetings.
connection to shipping and the sea explains why, in late adolescence, Thomas enlisted and briefly served as a privateer,[better source needed] before returning to Britain in 1759. There, he became a master stay-maker, establishing a shop in Sandwich, Kent. On September 27, 1759, Thomas Paine married Mary Lambert. His business collapsed soon after. Mary became pregnant; and, after they moved to Margate, she went into early labor, in which she and their child died.
There, Paine first became involved in civic matters, and he appears in the Town Book as a member of the Court Leet, the governing body for the town. He was also a member of the parish vestry, an influential local church group whose responsibilities for parish business would include collecting taxes and tithes to distribute among the poor. On March 26, 1771, at the age of 34, he married Elizabeth Ollive, his landlord’s daughter.
. On June 4, 1774, he formally separated from his wife Elizabeth and moved to London, where, in September, mathematician, Fellow of the Royal Society, and Commissioner of the Excise George Lewis Scott introduced him to Benjamin Franklin, who suggested emigration to British colonial America, and gave him a letter of recommendation. In October, Thomas Paine emigrated from Great Britain to the American colonies, arriving in Philadelphia on November 30, 1774.
These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like Hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.

Paine was born on January 29, 1736 [Note 1] (NS February 9, 1737), the son of Joseph Pain, or Paine, a Quaker, and Frances (née Cocke), an Anglican, in Thetford, an important market town and coach stage-post, in rural Norfolk, England. Born Thomas Pain, despite claims that he changed his family name upon his emigration to America in 1774, he was using Paine in 1769, while still in Lewes, Sussex.

The New Testament’s “doubting” Thomas and Judas “the betrayer” could also be symbolic and descriptive of this internal battle between the Christ Self and ego identity
Irenaeus also makes reference to the Valentinian practise of the Bridal Chamber, a ritualistic sacrament in which sexual union is seen as analogous to the activities of the paired syzygies that constitute the Valentinian Pleroma. Though it is known that Valentinus had a more fair approach to gender than much of the Catholic Church (he allowed women to hold positions of ordination in his community),
he Kabbalists originated in 13th-century Provence, which was at that time also the center of the Gnostic Cathars. While some scholars in the middle of the 20th century tried to assume an influence between the Cathar “gnostics” and the origins of the Kabbalah, this assumption has proved to be an incorrect generalization not substantiated by any original texts. On the other hand, other scholars, such as Scholem, have postulated that there was originally a Jewish gnosticism, which influenced the early origins of gnosticism.
Kabbalah does not employ the terminology or labels of non-Jewish Gnosticism, but grounds the same or similar concepts in the language of the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible). The 13th-century Zohar (“Splendor”), a foundational text in Kabbalah, is written in the style of a Jewish Aramaic Midrash, clarifying the five books of the Torah with a new Kabbalistic system that uses completely Jewish terms.

Fifteen years ago Congress approved and the “President” signed into “Law” a Thomas Paine National Memorial which would be constructed on the Mall in Washington DC. Unfortunately, the time ran out on the project — funds were insufficient and the Commissions that would have had to accept the design and plan did not make an acceptance in view of the insufficient funding. A new beginning can be made, and Thomas Paine Friends is conferring with other Paine groups to see whether to start again. (Contact Sherwood V. Smith, email@example.com, or any board member).
Proposals and volunteers are needed for two drives: to gain and keep members and to solicit funds. Seeking out appropriate funding agencies and making applications for grants is an important immediate task. (Contact Martha Spiegelman, firstname.lastname@example.org )
Several communities have arranged exhibits ranging from a single Thomas Paine poster to collections of memorabilia to video showings. Those who have already produced these exhibits are ready to assist others to assemble an exhibit or plan another kind of public event. (Contact Martha Spiegelman, email@example.com, or Robert N. Walsh, firstname.lastname@example.org ).

Mary Wollstonecraft (1797), author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, after delivering Mary Shelley
In the United States today, about 15 women die in pregnancy or childbirth per 100,000 live births. That’s way too many, but a century ago it was more than 600 women per 100,000 births. In the 1600s and 1700s, the death rate was twice that: By some estimates, between 1 and 1.5 percent of women giving birth died. Note that the rate is per birth, so the lifetime risk of dying in childbirth was much higher, perhaps 4 percent.
pro-feminist post (basic)
Thursday, September 07, 2006 5:12 AM
To my thousands (ahem) of loyal readers I have to admit this blog is no longer my own. I have received a visit from an angry (not to mention toothy) dinosaur suggesting I get off the fence and post something pro-feminist. I hate those who cave to such pressure only slightly less than the thought of being ripped into tiny bits by pearly-white saurian gnashers, so here goes – I’m keeping it very simple here and going for a gentle lob to bury at the back of the court. Something, in short, that nobody with blood still reaching the brain can find at all contentious – I have no desire to be descended upon by scores of people telling me I just ain’t feminist enough. Tho a bit of traffic would be nice – this isn’t exactly the kind of blog where the constant tramping of cyberfeet would keep you awake all night. Anyway, I offer you two things without too much comment:
First is this refreshing news from the godly land of America.
A Sunday school teacher has been sacked after 11 years because she is a woman. Mary Lambert was told she could not continue teaching at the church because Eve “is the root of all evil.” “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission, I do not permit a woman to teach a man” she was told in a letter from leaders at the church in Waterton, New York.
Now be honest – did you think this still happened even in Dubya’s America?
Second a link to something less depressing – not the first person to link to this, but who cares?
It’s almost as if some women do have things to teach the world!
It’s in the Bible: Sunday School Teacher Fired… For Being a Woman
Mary Lambert, 81, has been teaching Sunday school classes for 54 years. Now, a pastor at the First Baptist Church in Watertown, N.Y., who has been alive for fewer years than Lambert has been teaching has arranged for her dismissal. His reason is simple: the Bible prohibits women teaching and having authority over women. People are outraged, but the fact is the pastor is right.
Lambert was sexually abused by her father and others as a child, and has described herself as “end[ing] up being a depressed eight-year-old”

He had a lifelong ambition to make a film about his hero the political theorist and revolutionary Thomas Paine, whom he called “one of the finest men that ever lived”. He said in an interview in 2006 that “I could understand him. He wrote in simple English. I found all his aspirations – the rights of women, the health service, universal education… Everything you can think of that we want is in Rights of Man or The Age of Reason or Common Sense.” He could never secure the funding to do so. The website “A Gift for Dickie” was launched by two filmmakers from Luton in June 2008 with the aim of raising £40m in 400 days to help him make the film, but the target was not met and the money that had been raised was refund

Rosa Parks wasn’t the first black person to refuse to move to the back of the bus—nine months before, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin had done the same thing, and there were many others—but she is the most famous. Sixty years ago today, on December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for violating chapter 6, section 11 of the Montgomery County Code. Janus and Juno
The relationship between Janus and Juno is defined by the closeness of the notions of beginning and transition and the functions of conception and delivery, result of youth and vital force. The reader is referred to the above sections Cultual epithets and Tigillum Sororium of this article and the corresponding section of article Juno.
Janus and Vesta
The relationship between Janus and Vesta touches on the question of the nature and function of the gods of beginning and ending in Indo-European religion. While Janus has the first place Vesta has the last, both in theology and in ritual (Ianus primus, Vesta extrema). The last place implies a direct connexion with the situation of the worshipper, in space and in time. Vesta is thence the goddess of the hearth of homes as well as of the city. Her inextinguishable fire is a means for men (as individuals and as a community) to keep in touch with the realm of gods. Thus there is a reciprocal link between the god of beginnings and unending motion, who bestows life to the beings of this world (Cerus Manus) as well as presiding over its end, and the goddess of the hearth of man, which symbolises through fire the presence of life. Vesta is a virgin goddess but at the same time she is considered the mother of Rome: she is thought to be indispensable to the existence and survival of the community.
Jan is asz often the name of a woman asz a man.
